MacBook Not Fully Backing Up on External Hardrive

Hello Commnity,

My MacBook version 10.5.8 is not fully backing up on my exteranl hardrive. I have the Seagate Slim Mac 500 GB USB 3.0. It will back up 24 GB and then stops and closes saying an error occured and cannot complete. I am trying to back-up to install new software. I already returned the Passport for Mac because I was having the same issue. Any and all help would be appreciated. Also, Time Machine doesn't need to be updated as far as the Software Update says.
