Creating a Apple ID

I was trying to create an Apple ID for my son, as I am buying him a iPod Nano for his birthday...he is 11 yrs old and has his own email. Can he not have an Apple ID? It kept telling me he didn't meet the minimun age requirement...I went back and changed the birthdate to mine (I'm 43) and it said the same thing...weird. I obviously have an Apple ID but....

I'd rather his Nano not be associated with my Apple ID...If we have the same ID wouldn't our devices synch?

I would like for him to have his own Apple ID...

Posible?
