Grey screen with a flashing question mark appears when trying to start the comp. What could it mean?

I have a MacBook Air. Has anyone solved this issue? Am I going to loose all my previous data or there is still some way to retrieve it?

Go step by step and test.

Startup Manager to select Startup disk.

Repair Disk

Steps 2 through 8

Reset PRAM.

Reinstall OS X
