Time machine compatible with non-Mac systems?

Hi,

Apologies, this may be a silly question, but I can't find a straightforward answer on google, so here goes:

If I use Time Machine to backup my Mac, could I recover my files to another system type (e.g., Linux or Windows), or would I be locked in to Apple forever?
