Hacked SMS Messages
I’m aware many may think this situation is absurd or “impossible.” But, a very strange event occurred to me tonight, and as I was researching “5s hacking” I came across several different forum posts that occurred in the past 5 months that report a similar situation. However, in every one, someone simply brushed them off and tells them hacking is “impossible,” but with the recent Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) flaw on the Apple's mobile operating system and other hacking incidents that have occurred lately, I will not accept that hacking is “impossible.” I simply want an answer on to why this happened and how to prevent this from ever happening again, because I AM VERY SCARED.
Here is a detailed report on what exactly occurred tonight on 4/20 at 1:41 midnight. I also believe it is important to note my 5s is not “jail broken” and no modifications have been made to my phone.
At 1:41 AM, I sent a series of SMS messages to my roommate with a picture in the midst of the messages. I also would like to point out that I was sitting downstairs at a friend’s house with only 4 people, and my phone never left my hands during this entire episode.
Approximately 30 minutes late, I get a very angry call from my boyfriend claiming he got a picture of my texts messages that I sent to my friend from an unknown number.
After clearing up the misunderstanding between my boyfriend and I about what the text messages seemed to indicate, we discussed further about from whom the text message was sent.
He then sent me screenshot of what the unknown number sent him (A “screenshot” of my texts)
When I attempted to call this number-it turns out that the number does not exist. (the number is 8083207978)
Regardless, we determined my friend somehow found a way to screenshot my message and send it through an unknown number to him in order to make her look less “incriminating.”
Of course, very angry and hurt, I come home and ask my roommate why she would send my boyfriend those texts I thought I sent her in confidence.
She pleaded to me that she did not send those text messages. I have known and lived with this girl from many, many years, and I know when she is telling the truth.
After clearing up everything, my roommate and I started going through everything that happened in detail. And upon further investigation, we noticed several very odd things about the supposed “screenshot” that was sent to my boyfriend.
- ) The “screenshot” is indeed not a screenshot, it actually appears like someone took a picture of my texts from a computer screen (it’s blurry and is pixel-like looking)
- ) My roommate could not have possibly sent that “screenshot” because what my boyfriend received was a picture of texts that were blue and appeared on the right side. And, of course, SMS’s that are blue and on the right indicate that those SMS messages are the ones being sent from the user. Otherwise, they would be grey or green and appear on the left, which indicates that those text messages are the one’s that are incoming from someone else besides the user.
- ) The formatting of each text line is different. For example, a text that appeared on my phone took up two lines and had a large margin. But the “screenshot” sent to my boyfriend had texts on only one line (not two) and the margins were drastically different. So clearly, someone pulled up my txt messages on a different device other than my own or an iphone.
Therefore, after examining the above points, I believe someone found a way to pull up my text messages on a computer, took a picture of said texts, and then found a way to send the picture to my boyfriend through a “fake” number.
THIS IS VERY SCARY FOR ME. I do not believe I have angered anyone, so I’m hoping this is just some random person that’s bored and finds some kind of pleasure in hacking into an individual’s phone and causing havoc. Nevertheless, I would be greatly appreciative if someone took the time to examine this further and inform me of the steps I need to take to ensure this never happens again. I would also hate for someone else to experience this situation as well!
