How does one "know if the file was added?" There is NO feedback to tell where the file went or how it will be described. Nor is there any feedback if the operation failed.

Look in your iTunes library (Music list) and see if it is there.

Still nothing to tell you if/when the operation failed and why.
If you use the Automatically Add to iTunes folder to add media anything that iTunes cannot add will be moved to the Not Added folder. It won't tell you why it failed, but at least you'll know exactly which files iTunes has rejected.
iTunes may reject mp3 files with certain internal inconsistencies. Try checking them with mp3val.
