I need help with my 1TB Hitachi HD formatting

Hi Apple friends,

Does any one can help me out with my HD 1TB 7200RPM SATA III.

I am in the progress in formatting a HD for my old (2006)Laptop with my iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel.

I am using the Disk Utility, Erase, format (Mac OS Extended journaled)

I inserted it last night at 12pm and it's 10am and still in the middle of the blue progress bar.

I don't see it in the list of devices, I tried to cancel the progress but it gave a message that if I stop the process

it would damage the HD. So I let it continue, but I don't feel any running sound from the hard drive.

I am using a device converter via USB (like external device).

Any advise is very apreciated.

Regards,

Sam

Drive Partition and Format

1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.

4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.

6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

Thanks for your fine time in trying to help me on this matter Kappy,

I already tried to install the hard drive in the laptop, but it didn't recognized it, It only showed a folder with a question mark.

I inserted the installation dvd'd I have, but nothing worked.

What I just wonder is how can I reboot it with the DVD's I have, or is there any other disc I should use?

In the meantime the new hard drive still in the formatting mode in my iMac.

Should this help to give me another option?

Thanks

Hi Kappy,

Sorry for the time in responding I have some visitors at home.

The format process still running.

The one I need to install the new hard drive is a macbook Pro (2006)

MacBook Pro 15.4" 1.83GHz Core Duo (MA463LL/A, A1150, MacBookPro1,1) - Early 2006

2gb.

Now the iMac I'm using to format the hard drive is:

3.06ghz with 4gb running OS 10.7.5 INTEL CORE DUO 4gb (27")

2 dvd's I have are silver color and one says

Application Install DVD

the next one says: Mac OS X Install DVD

and I have the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD

I am gonna cancel it. am tired of waiting.

Thanks for you time and help,
