As I;m not happy with icloud, I'm going to attempt setting up my own cloud service so I can store all my stuff on the Airport and access it from anywhere, without my mac being turned on.
Before I get started has anyone already done such a thing and may offer me advice.....
Also, 've been told that a tonidoplug 2 is a good thing to own to get this started...is this necessary?

Not if you want remote access to the TC.
Look at Tesserax document on remote access.

Note.. if you have a slow upload link at home, your data access speed is going to grind to a near halt.. if you have slow upload speed at the other end, copying stuff to the TC will be incredibly slow.. most internet is slow upload fast download. The advantage of cloud is at least it is only slow in one direction.. Download should be fast.
You pay for packets twice.. every time you download a file it is uploaded and downloaded and is charged by each ISP to you.
