how do i make room or clear some of the stuff out of my start up disk?

iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder
iPhoto '11: Move your iPhoto library to a new location
Delete apps you don't use any more.
Video, in particular, uses a lot of room, so move video files to an external HD.
Don't buy CleanMyMac.
