MacBook Pro 13 Inch Mid 2012 Hard Drive Replacement

Hi Guys,

Thinking about replacing my stock 500GB hard drive in my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 13 Inch to a 1TB drive at 5200rpm as I don't really need the speed increase of a 7200rpm and would rather have improved battery life and have a hard drive a bit quiter.

However just wondering your opinions on the Western Digital Blue at the link below:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/inch-SATA-Internal-Hard-Drive/dp/B00C9TEBJQ/ref=sr_1_1?i e=UTF8&qid=1398026527&sr=8-1&keywords=Western+Digital+Blue+1TB+2.5%22#productDet ails

Does it work in my version of the MacBook Pro? I've always used Western Digital drives in my desktop no problem, just wondering about this working in my MBP.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Cheers.

Just saying, I tried to put the hgst 7200 rpm 1tb in my mid 2012 MacBook Pro and restore from a sierra time machine backup on an external drive. Problem is when I ran disk utility, it didn't recognize the newly installed internal hard drive like at all. I searched volumes in terminal still couldn't locate it and I know it was properly done. So I went to a well know computer parts/electronics store and got the same one because the first one I bought came from amazon, Thinking it got damaged in shipment. The new one I bought didn't work either. So i put the old one back in and it works just fine. So tomorrow I'm going to switch brands and see if that works. I don't recommend this hard drive for this model not because it doesn't work for everybody, but because it definitely doesnt work on my machine. I would hate to know other people have to deal with replacing/reseating theirs 5 different times like I did.

May I ask why you are considering this? The "accepted wisdom" is to minimise what is stored on the main hard drive, to store stuff like music and pictures on am external drive. It is more efficient and your Mac will work better. That way you do not need a huge internal drive.

I will take a different position. For about a year now I have used 1 TB HDDs in my MBPs. I have had 1 TB 5400 rpm HGST HHDs, 1 TB 7200 rpm HGST HDDs and now have 1 TB SSHD Seagate in my late 2011 MBP.

They all have been quiet with no performance issues. Though I do have much data on external HDDs (principally videos) I would prefer to have all of my data resident on my MBP. In my opinion that would be more convenient for several reasons but large enough drives are not available yet. My current drive is about 90% full.

Quite frankly I fail to understand the 'accepted wisdom' since my experience tends to refute that premise.

I can recommend any of the afore mentioned drives as valid options as an internal HDD.

Ciao.

The 7200rpm has little impact on battery life.

The faster the drive spins the quicker the data is written or read, so the less time the drive is draining battery power.

Yes, all the drives on the macsales site are compatible with the MBP or MB. The MBP is now the only remaining model that will accept a standard HDD.

I have used WD, Seagate and Hitachi drives in various MacBooks without any problems.

I like the idea of the hybrid drives and have used Seagate XT. The real benefit is faster startup times. If you don't shutdown your MBP then you may not notice any speed gain over a non-hybrid drive.

I replaced my 5400 rpm with this (240 GB):

Nice!

Would have gotten a larger one if it wasn't for the price.....

And if I had not opted for an SSD, I certainly would have gone for a 7200 rpm or hybrid; my experience with the 5400 lasted about a month after I got a Mini with one - I sold the Mini at a loss because everything took about 33% longer (read/write). I will never again have a 5400 and actually ordered the SSD before the MBP got here.
