Artist View

Hi, I have an nano 7g. When I view my music by 'Artist', the artists are all shown correctly in a long list. However under each artist name is the word 'unknown'. I don't know what information is missing? To be clear, the artist names ARE shown correctly and sorted correctly. I just want to know what the 'unknow' under each name refers to.
