Q: Aperture Frequently Crashes After Installing Mavericks

I update to Mavericks a couple of months ago and since then my whole computer has been far slower and buggy. Most noticeable is Aperture's performance. The time it takes to load a photo and the number of times it crashes when performing simple tasks has rendered it useless at this point. Has anyone else noticed a drastic decline in Aperture's performance with Mavericks? I am toying with doing a full wipe of the hard drive and reinstalling everything, but that will take a huge amount of time and effort. I was hoping there might be a better solution to get Aperture working again. Any insight would be appreciated.

I Am Using:

2.8 GHZ Intel Core i5

8 GB 1333MHZ DDR3

OSX 10.9.2

Thanks

Brad

I have in fact noticed just the opposite with Aperture being snappier under Mavericks

In addition to the wipe and reinstall taking a huge amount of time, I would bet that it will not buy you anything at all.

I would like to suggest instead that you download and install EtreCheck from http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Run EtreCheck and publish report here

. Most noticeable is Aperture's performance. The time it takes to load a photo and the number of times it crashes when performing simple tasks has rendered it useless at this point.

This may be a problem of incompatible software (plug-ins, old kernel extensions) - Allan's suggestion to run EtreCheck will help to weed these out.

But slowness and crashes could also be due to a corrupted Aperture library, corrupted media files in your Aperture library, or wrong settings in your user account. Before going to the trouble to reinstall the system, make sure, you are really having having a system wide problem.

    • Test Aperture on a new Aperture library with a few test images, to test if the library or the images and videos inside may be causing this.
    • Test Aperturein  a different user account, to make sure that not items in the user library in your regular account are causing this - preferences, presets, fonts, caches, plug-ins.

You have additional video software installed. Check, if you have the 3ivxVideoCodec.component installed. That has been known to cause crashes. See this support article:

Thanks for the response. I checked and I do not have that particular component installed.
