Peachpit "Motion5" p. 54, Step 11 drop-down issue - my screen looks different

This problem requires the Peachpit "Motion5" book to reference because it is copyrighted and I can't take a picture of the page in question.

The subject page shows a drop-down window with "sliders" for Red, Blue, and Green and one is supposed to enter in new values for each color. HOWEVER, since the book is old and based on an earlier version of Motion5, this is a PROBABLE cause as to why the dropdown I'm getting looks different from the book's version.

So, either the dropdown has changed, OR, "I'm not getting it." (the latter is a real possibility although I've tried every option I can think of)

NOTE: I've tried to find Errata information for the book and there are only a few items listed, none of which covers this issue.

My screen shot:

User uploaded file

The lesson requires that one type in 0.63 for Red, 0.35 for Green, and 0.06 for Blue. Unfortunately, one cannot enter in a decimal point, ergo, this cannot be done.

The screen shot is for Motion 5.1

Any ideas?

POSSIBLE solution:

In the sidebar under "Filters" and to the right of "Remap White", I clicked on the disclosure triangle which opened up a section at the bottom of the "Timeline" pane that is under the Colorize bar.

Made this section (Untitled Set) larger by moving the top of the bar up to reveal the RGB values. Changed the "Remap White" values to those requested in the book and the resultant color exactly matches the book color.

The values were reset by sliding the cursor left and right over the RBG number value. Maybe there is a better way to do this as this method seems very crude. Nevertheless, it got the job done.

Whether this is the proper way to change the values or just a clunky workaround, I don't know, but at this point I'm moving on. How can anyone remember all this???

This is what the Timeline pane looked like when the RGB section was opened up.

Click the arrowhead to get the color pallet.

Click the actual colored box to get the Apple color picker.

Motion has always worked this way, and it is mentioned early in the book. Depending on what version you have, some of those APTS Motion books were pretty confusing. Very much hoping they do a much more clearer version of that book soon.

The book said to "... click the disclosure triangle ...." and I took that to mean the triangle to the right of the Remap colored square. This I tried numerous times and wound up with the color scheme shown in your right screen shot.

This has been a while so I don't remember the exact place, but after clicking on the arrow on the left side of the Remap (or maybe it was the colored square like you showed) there was a better window that opened:

This one allowed me to dial in exactly the paramerters that was asked for.

WHEW!

What an ordeal. But it's over and figured out now. A relief.

Like you mentioned, I also was waiting for the publisher, or some other publisher, to come out with a Motion 5.1 book but couldn't wait any longer. If they continue to print and sell the old "5" version you'd think they'd at least have a good Eratta page somewhere that would provide the changes as well as fill in the holes in the procedures. Certainly, if this was used for class instruction they would know what questions the students struggled with. Oh well.

Currently I'm up to page 65 and struggling with Step 13 to get the bright orange/brownish-yellow color they show. I'm only able to get a light version of the general background color. Tried the grey also, and ditto there. Just isn't working. I'm getting the colors I want in the color box but not on the screen. Sort of a partial. The HUD looks just like the picture in the book.

In Step 12 it says to "click the Add Filter pop-up menu ..." but I can't find where they're talking about it. I've looked everywhere. Need to take a rest and work on this tomorrow.

Thanks for the support.

Edit: What happened? What do you mean? This didn't help me - Geeze, I wrote it! Need to get some rest.

The current book is accurate, but what you saw was a typo. There is no reason to make a 5.1 book, as nothing major has changed, really. The book is a tad confusing in places, and full of typeos and bad editing. Don't hold your breath for a new book. That only happens when major updates are released that bring in drastic new features, changes, etc. This is the book we trainers are requried to use for Apple Authorized Training.

Rather than refer to page number, since many of us, especially us trainers, use the eBook versions, refer to the lesson number, the section and step number. Then I can look it up specifically. Some filters/behaviros have an Add Filter menu, but without knowing which specifically you're working with, I can't anser that.

I much prefer the macProVideo.com online training for starting off with Motion 5. Then move on to the more advanced stuff at Ripple Training.

Yeah, that book can get confusing and is full of editing errors. It isn't the easiest to follow in several places.

Thanks for coming back Ben.

First off, what I wrote at the bottom of my last post was with regard to what I saw at the bottom of my post when I posted it. For some really wierd reason it disapeared later and I never went back to re-edit. Just so you know, it had nothing to do with what you wrote.

The book is a tad confusing in places, and full of typeos and bad editing.

Amen! Especially the confusing part. With regard to "typeos" as a 'student' these are really hard to find. I trust what is written even though I'm finding I shouldn't. There really needs to be a good errata list for this book. The one the publisher has is only a few paragraphs so it's a joke.

This is the book we trainers are requried to use for Apple Authorized Training.

"we trainers" - does that mean you're 'one of them'? What I'd give to see your errata sheet if you have one. One could create a web page, post it, then charge admission to read it.

Rather than refer to page number, since many of us, especially us trainers, use the eBook versions, refer to the lesson number, the section and step number.

Good point. Never thought about that.

I much prefer the macProVideo.com online training for starting off with Motion 5. Then move on to the more advanced stuff at Ripple Training.

I'll give it a look.

As an editorial comment, you'd think that a publisher, someone in the business of printing books, especially as many books as Peachpit publishes, then selling them at $64.99 US, would have put together a GOOD errata page for each book. Heck, I could even do that and I don't have the resources that they have. ~Three paragraphs - that's a joke!

Also got the "How to Cheat in Motion" book so when I get a little further along in the "Motion 5" book I can't waint to give some of it's ideas a try.

One more editorial comment: FCPX without Motion is kinda like eating french fries without salt.

Errata is here, in the "Updates" section on this page:

http://www.peachpit.com/store/apple-pro-training-series-motion-5-9780321774682

Peachpit even has a button at the bottom of this section, "Submit Errata", where you can give them corrections you think should be made.

Yes, I am an Apple Certified Master Trainer. I have been an ACT since FCP version 4. I was teaching FCP seminars independently for more than a year before that (and still do both).

Yes, I do produce training material for macProVideo.com, and I'd not work with them if I didn't think they were top shelf in their quality.

So there's that disclosure!

Personally, I'd love to see a new Motion 5.1 book released that is revamped from the ground up, in the vien of the new FCPX 10.1; Professional Post-Production by Brendan Boykin. That is a super well done book!

Hey Ben!

Thanks for the reply and that Motion tutorial list at http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/category/motion was really good.

A friend of mine sold his video camera because of a few dead pixels and one of the tutorials dealt with specific pixels. Almost wonder if he could have "fixed" his pixel problem in post using Motion.

Here is one of my favorite links for you, "Jambalaya":

Thanks again. I'll see if I can come up with another "problem". 🙂
