Software won't upgrade,,, Mac OS X version 10.6.8

Hi there,

I have been having some problems with my mac book pro, which I bought in 2011. It's currently still version 10.6.8.

I get notifications that there is software ready to be updated. I always choose the option to update and after it supposedly updated it says that I have to restart the laptop. After I restart, and I manually click on software update, it shows the exact same options available to update (so I guess they weren't updated?)

I can repeat this over and over again but somehow I'm never able to update everything that can be updated.
I recently spoke to someone who told me that 10.6.8 might be the reason that I'm not able to update any software, because it's outdated.

He told me that I should buy the 10.9 version on the apple website.

When I want to go to my mail website, it says that my browser it outdated or needs to be upgraded. I also haven't been able to send any printer jobs to my printer from my laptop. They're just added to the queue and they never get through. However, I don't think my printer is the problem, as it prints 'printer status reports' etc (to check if the printer itself still works). I can also still scan documents to my laptop, but I just can't print.

As I don't know a lot about this topic, I wanted to ask for help on this forum. Should I just buy the 10.9 version, will i be able to update everything then?

In case somebody is familiar with this problem or knows what to do, could you please share some information with me or give me some advice? I would really appreciate it.

Thank you in advance!

What is the update that keeps reappearing? If it is Mavericks, go to the  menu/About this Mac and see what OS is installed.

I have no trouble doing updates in my 10.6.8 partition, so I don't think this is the problem.

Some web sites will do this because the browser in10.6.8 hasn't been updated. Nothing to really worry about.

Printer - did this just start happening or has it been like this? Is the printer attached to the computer or is it a network printer?

Reference updating to Mavericks.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Do a backup before installing.

If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again. You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

Bootable USB Flash Drive – Diskmaker X

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install Mavericks, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything.
