Numbers

Once you verify Office can read all the documents you wrote in iWork, then yes, you can remove those programs of Numbers and Pages without a problem.

Mind you, Pages is good to keep around in case you run into a Word file with macros that acts funny, because Pages does not support the Macros. Some limited Word Macro viruses could impact Word itself. This is especially a problem if you get attachments from people you don't know that are Microsoft Word.

Before you remove Pages and Numbers apps, use them to convert any iWork documents that you want to keep.

For Pages documents, Menu > File > Export > Word

For Numbers documents, Menu > File > Export > Excel

Office (Word and Excel) will not open iWork (Pages and Numbers) documents.

Numbers 2.3 (Numbers '09) had categories. Is this what you mean?

Numbers 3 does not have that feature. However, you can use the COUNTIF or SUMIF functions.

I should have said Numbers 2.3 (Numbers '09) has categories. Numbers '09 will still work on your machine.
