Q: My MacBook Pro is starting to run slowly and battery life is degrading

My MacBook has started to run slowly. I have run EtreCheck and below are the results. As well as this the battery life has started to get quite bad and it also gets very hot when on for a duration of time.  Any suggestions on how I can resolve these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Running slow, Battery decreasing, heat -- that has all the hallmarks of some process doing hard work, using a lot of CPU.

Open Activity Monitor, click on CPU tab. The table should be sorted by CPU % use, but you can click on the clumns to re-sort if necessary. You should be able to see what processes are using lots of CPU.

26% is quite high for FireFox, I would have thought. Do you have lots of webpages open?

Also, what's the ManyCam driver? Do you need that?

Have you tried a safe boot?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564

Go to System Information>Power and post this from your MBP:

Make certain that your power adapter is connected.

    Ciao.

You have enough memory and enough free disk space.

But you have counterproductive (at least) software installed:

    Uninstall ManyCam: http://manycam.com/uninstall/mac

    Uninstall Hamachi (Logmein).

Take uTorrent out of the LoginItems.

I hope you did not use uTorrent to download software, if you did, uninstall that software.

I have looked at my CPU and saw that Drop Box was using a good amount so I've removed that. The CPU % for Firefox is sitting around 5-10% when I have just this tab open.

    I've also removed ManyCam.

    Thanks,

Your battery has seen much service but is still functional.  It does no have any bearing on the slow performance of your MBP.

Download istat menus or Bresink Temperature Monitor and post the output when your MBP gets hot:

    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/

    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html

LexSchellings can and will address your MBP performance problems as well as I, if not better.

    Ciao.

    Personally I prefer bresink's software.

I propose to remove all autostarts from SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems (with the minus sign underneath).

Dropbox is only using memory and cpu when syncing, it is not a bad software at all.

As I said in my earlier post:

"I hope you did not use uTorrent to download software, if you did, uninstall that software."

I would avoid using Torrent apps at all, but in any case never download software with it.

    Lex.
