Can I get Siri to let me dictate for longer than 40 seconds?

The only way I could find was to tap the mic again or try a dictation app like Dragon Dictation.

Dragon dictation also only allows about 40 seconds of dictation before it automatically closes and writes your recording into text. Since registering this query I contacted Apple tech support and they informed me that 40 seconds is about all you can get. The technician however suggested that I contact the feedback section of Apple and make the suggestion for a longer dictation period be allowed. Many thanks for your help.
You're welcome. Thanks for the info. I looked at the Dragon Dictation app and it showed dictating pages of text. Oh well.
Dragon will do pages and pages - 40 sec at a crack. Your normal speech probably has some occasional pauses that dragon uses.
