I want to change my Macintosh HD icon to an icon of iMac. Where do I find this and do it?
I also want to change other HD icons on desktop - how is this done in Mavericks?

Get Info on the icons and Paste the desired image into the icon well in the Get Info window. For the Macintosh HD, and maybe others, you will need to authenticate as admin to change it.
It's pretty simple, right click on the folder/icon/data and then drag an image (use 512 by 512 icon format) over the current image on the top left hand side of the window (not on the preview section but on the General and Add Tags section). Again for best optimized and effecient results, find an .icn or .icon extention file which is 512 x 512 pixels.
Will I need to open the locked box with password on those to do this? Anyone know where I can get a quick IMac 27" icon?
No, but you'll still need to authenticate after you paste.
There are lots of places. I googled for hard drive icons so I could grab a picture to test with and found lots of results.

They're in .png extention, you can convert them into .icn by a simple app like Img2icn or even use the online converter. Barney-15E answered the rest.
