dual boot 10.3 & 10.4 (and maybe linux too!)

dual boot 10.3 & 10.4 (and maybe linux too!)

alright ppl, any reason why i can't have a dual boot system with 10.3.9 and 10.4.x installed in separate partitions? i might also have ubuntu installed on another partition. this will be on a fresh hard drive hopefully.

i'm thinking i'll keep the 10.3 partion small (3-5 Gig) and use the Tiger partition as the main area of the disc. any prblems with that?

No reason at all. As long as you have each one on its own partition it'll work fine.

Dual booting 10.3 and 10.4 is easy enough. Though I'd give both 10.3 and 10.4 10 GB partitions. As for Linux, I'm not sure how that would work. Check with the Ubuntu for Mac forums:

thanks for the replies. why a 10GB partition? is that for virtual memory? i have 1.25 GB RAM installed. i'll be using 10.3 for just 1 app (protools) so want to keep it as small as possible.

oh, and there's no reason why my iMacG5 DVDs wont work on a powerbook or is there?

It is for both virtual memory, and logfiles, and the need to avoid data writing and rewriting in so small a space from slowing down the machine.

oh, and there's no reason why my iMacG5 DVDs wont work on a powerbook or is there?

There is. Those disks are licensed only for the machines they came with. And evidence exists that certain models will install different drivers which could potentially yield kernel panics like those in my FAQ:

right, i'm running protool on panther so I still want my 10.3 install to be as fast as possible.

ahh, forgot about things like licenses. i imagine there's a generic OS X install I can get from apple then.

You can buy a generic 10.4 installer from Apple. A 10.3 installer I don't think is available anymore. However, some of these used and refurbished Mac shops may have a 10.3 full retail. Be careful though that you get the black disks with a white and gray X logo. The gray disks with another Mac model have been found being sold by some of these vendors.

Ever thought about getting a small external drive, and putting your kinux and 10.3 on that?

I have a Panther install disk for sale. Still in the box, and even has X Code and the coupons. How do I contact you?
