Q: How do you set up AirPort Time Capsule as an external network hard drive on an existing wireless network?
After reviewing a number of threads on this subject, I have been unsuccesful in my efforts.
I have reset the unit a number of times. I have connected the unit via the WAN outlet to a router on my home network. When the unit starts it does not allow me to select a wireless connection to connect to. In essence, I want to use a particular wireless connection for the unit to connect to and use the unit as a network hard drive.

The Time Capsule needs to connect using Ethernet.....not wireless. Connect from a LAN <--> port on your current wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Select the option to create a new network, and name it whatever you want.
Once the Time Capsule is setup, you can go back in using AirPort Utility and turn off the wireless service on the Time Capsule.
Then, the Time Capsule will perform as a network hard drive using your current wireless network, or you can connect using Ethernet for much faster backups if you prefer.
If your current wireless router was furnished to you by your Internet Service Provider, chances are that the Time Capsule will run circles around the router in terms of wireless performance, but that may be another discussion.
