Upgrading MacBook Pro 13" OS

I wante to upgrade my Mac OS and learned that I need 8 GB of memory. My MacBook has 4 GB and when I tried to purchase additional memory the message says no memory available.

How would I upgrade my MacBook to run latest OS?

Thanks for any insight!

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

Your Mac needs:

  • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
  • 8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Do a backup before installing.

Boot using the disks that came with your computer, the Snow Leopard DVD (if installed) or the Recovery volume (command -R) if upgrading from Lion. Use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair the disk and run Repair Permissions. Restart normally.

If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again. You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

THanks for this info - I have a Macbook Pro late 2006 model 2.1, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Having read your reply and done a bit of research I think I have worked out that I won't be able to upgrade it to anything else? This is a shame as it has given me many years of faithful service and is still in great condition, but I guess the time has come to move on. If anyone can confirm that I can't do anything else to my baby that would be useful, but even better would be if someone has an idea of how I can move up to Mountain/Maverick.

Thank you

The MacBook Pro 3.1 is the oldest model capable of running ML or Mavericks.

You can run Lion though: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion

Also note, that even though you can install 4 Gigs of a RAM in a MacBook Pro 2.1, it can only use 3 Gigs of RAM.

You may also want to verify the identification of your model further, as the earliest 13" MacBook Pro was introduced in Mid 2009 and is a Model ID 5.5. You may have a "MacBook" as opposed to a "MacBook Pro."
