Q: Mac Pro 2013 keep freezing

Its been a while i'm searching a solution for this.

Since I have my new Mac Pro (February 27th) it keeps freezing. I can still move my mouse, music keep playing, but i can't do anything else. I have to reboot manually the computer. I called Apple Care 3 times. Did a PRAM reset, verify & repaid disk, format the Mac but the problem is still there.

its random and i can't put the finger on what's going on.

At first it was just freezing. But a month later, screen started to "glitch", like the graphic card was about to die. I'm using the same material than on my other Mac (screen, mouse, external hard drive, keyboard etc.) The only thing i change its the computer. Everything was fine BEFORE.

I thought it could be my external hard drive (because it was always open for Time Machine and get my backup files from my older Mac). I verify the disk, the firmware, but evrything was OK. So I turn it off and everything was fine for about 8 days. Open the computer this morning, turn on the External Hard Drive and 15 min later, it froze. I emailed LaCie company, made some verification with them, they think it could be the cable. I turn my External Drive off and continue my work. Thought after 2 months finally i was over with this.

Unfortunately, the Mac froze again 4 hours later.... but the External Hard Drive was off...

I can't find any pattern. I had the same app opened as usual (thunderbird, transmit, itunes, chrome, sublime text, skype) nothing to crash a brand new Mac Pro.....

Honestly i'm very disappointed.

Anyone have an idea ??

agree, apple hardware test but also on your reformat, did you do a true clean install by booting into internet recovery and deleting the disk before reinstalling?

Either call AppleCare againor, better yet,

    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Badly for me, i can't make it froze on purpose, so i'm not sure the Genius Bar could help me much... Guess i'll call AppleCare again.

keep your phone with you, record a few videos of it freezing and take with you

if not, the g bar trip will be a waste, they will check diag (clean) and reinstsall osx so if they can't see the issue, they will say nothing is wrong

    Hi nitro

I'm having the same problems you have.

Are you using adobe software ? This seems to be the cause, at least that's what apple's second line support team is gathering from a system data collection I sent in. The exact same setup with mavericks, hw and sw works perfectly on a 2011 MacBook Pro and on a 2209 Mac Pro. I haven't gotten work done for weeks because of this. Two weeks in a apple certified repair shop with no errors found. Of course they wipe the hard drive and use only system test tools, and none of the software we as users buy macs for.

Have you made any progress with these errors ?

I thought too it could be a software problem but it isnt.

In my case, Its been a **** of a road but i'm Almost done ! I had to go to the Genius Bar 2 weeks ago (Nice 6 hour trip) and they agreed to change my Mac Pro for another one. They authorize the remplacement but Since i've got a Custom Build, i had to call back AppleCare to arrange a pick up. Apple Care Service told me they have to get my Mac Pro back before sending me another one. So i would lose my computer for 3 or 4 weeks. Since its my work computer, it was unacceptable.

So i called back the Apple Store I went to, explain my problem, and they offer me to do the remplacement and i could keep my computer while the new was ordered but i have to do a 6 hour trip to to the switch.

3-4 week or 6 hour trip, the choice was easy ! Thanks to the Apple Store, i can continue to work (or try to) while i'm waiting for the new one.

Honestly, apple care phone support is horrible. I called Like 8 times and it was always complicated. Next Time, i'm going directly to the Genius Bar. My computer is brand new, it doesnt work Like it should, i'm a client for 10 years, always took care of my apple things, give me another one !

I'm still waiting for my new computer, can't wait to get it, i'm so frustrated with the continuous freezing problems !!

    Hi Brissou

I've been having the same problems as well since day 1. However, the latest 10.9.3 OS update has made my machine a whole lot more stabile. Performed yet another clean install first workday after 10.9.3 was released, and the machine hasn't crashed since. The graphics card, and software support for it, is most likely the problem.

Check out this article here : http://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2014/20140310_4-Photoshop-crashes.html

Turn off all GPU acceleration for all Adobe programs you use. This isn't software supported until future releases. Why not just stick with Nvidia... ;-)
