Display won't stay tilted

Just got a 20" G5 iMac and the display is "loose" on the stand so that it won't stay at the angle appropriate for viewing. It "droops" downward with the weight of the display. Is there a way to adjust the tension to make it stay put? I hate to send it in for a repair.

You can open the back if you DO NOT have the iMac G5 iSight. If you go to the support link tab, look up your iMac model, there should be some How-To articles. It may not directly show you how to tighten up neck but it does have some good diagrams and photos that might point you in the right direction...

Otherwise, if you do not have a self serviceable iMac, you will need to bring it in...

Thanks, Rick. It's the iSight model and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to service it. I bought it as a store return, and it's had some parts replaced since the serial number doesn't show in System Profiler. Probably happened as a result of the service. It's 120 miles to the nearest Mac Store. 😟

You can always use a piece of cardboard or even the inside tube of a paper towel roll and wedge it between Mac and stand.

If you really wanted to get creative, you can buy a 3" piece of rubber or plastic hose @ 1+ inches in diameter at your local hardware store and use that instead... just be careful not to block the air intake right above the power supply...

Yeah, I've got an old Word 2001 clamshell case wedged in there that works perfectly. Finally that old version is doing something other than collecting dust!

I'll want to get it fixed since it will affect the resale value somewhere down the road. I have about 6 months of Applecare left.

That's a good deal... did that include installing?

That's the only charge to me on my invoice. They were replacing the logic board under warranty at the same time, so there is a charge for labor covered under warranty that might include the labor charge for installing the stand. Still waiting for the repair to be completed so I'll know more when I pick it up.

We have determined the stand was damaged in shipping. I just got it on eBay and the seller says it was in mint condition when he shipped it. They are refunding me the cost of the stand and they will make a claim on FedEx for shipping damage.

I had no idea it was shipping damage as there was no damage to the shipping container. Seems the only way the stand could have been bent was from dropping the package. I had no idea it was bent until the Apple Genius pointed it out to me when I mentioned the problem with the display not staying tilted.

Now I'm wondering if the logic board failure had something to do with the shipping. At least that part of it is covered under warranty.
