Running Mavericks + FCPX on External Boot Drive?

I have a 2010 Mac Pro with 2 x 2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon. Running OS X 10.6.8 and FCP 7.

I want to run Mavericks and FCPX on an external drive to test FCPX and if I would be comfortable using it.

Is this possible? If so, how do I do it?
