How do you set up a old ethernet printer in airport extreme?

When I got my Macbook Pro I networked it with an old G4, an ethernet laser printer and an ethernet inkjet printer. When I did the setup in Mountain Lion the set up was simple. Now that the old G4 is deceased I am trying to set up the ethernet laser printer connected directly to the Airport Extreme. Nothing works. I even tried using the IP settings both through the router and directly to the laptop. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 8 GB memory 750 GB hard drive

Can you ping the printer from the MBP?

The printer has to be in the same IP subnet network as the MBP..

Is the printer set to pick up IP from router via dhcp or is it set statically.. if the ping fails and you cannot access it then simply change the IP setup of the printer. Using dhcp is much easier.

Delete all the original printers from your preferences and then scan again for new network printers.. ML is pretty good at picking up any suitable printer.

TC/IP is inactive on my printer. It is configured to communicate with the computer via the ethernet address which uses DHCP automatically. I was able to ping the ethernet and the broadcast IP. If I activate TC/IP on the printer what happens to the ethernet.

This is an old GCC Elite 1208 XL printer whose life I am trying to prolong for a little while. If I can't get it set up I will deep six it.

Thanks for you suggestions. I will try to see if they will work.
