AirPort Extreme 11ac Firmware Update failing.

I have a fairly new AirPort Extreme 11ac running with my MBP and several other wireless devices. It is running version 7.7.2 software. It has been working fine.

Tonight I noticed that the led on the front was flashing and that there was a message on the screen (AirPort Utility came in) that a firmware update was available. I told it to install. It downloaded and then proceeded to install. Then it stopped with an error message, "An error occured withle updating the firmware. -6".

Thank goodness it keeps working and my WiFi is working. Do I need to connect it directly to the MBP? Do I need to connect a hardwire Ethernet cable?

Anyone else see this problem?

Thanks

Apple's servers are overloaded, and there are also problems with iCloud at this time.

Wait a day or two and try the update again. Connect your Mac to the AirPort using an Ethernet cable if possible for the update.

Thank you. Glad it was nothing on my end. I will wait a day or so and then connect it to my MBP with an Ethernet cable and try again.

Does it hurt to let the LED keep flashing? I assume it is just telling me to open the AirPort Utility so that I can download the update.

It would be nice if Apple would send a message of some sort that the servers are overloaded.

I received the same error message as you did while updating an AirPort Extreme TimeCapsule over EtherNet from an iMac. However, after quitting and restarting the AirPort Utility, the error warning 'light' was gone. It now shows the TimeCapsule to be running normally with 7.7.3 software. A bridged Extreme and an Express came back online with no issues so far.

That error message doesn't inspire much confidence in the update, does it?

I have had the issue also - showing new 7.7.3 on airport router but the amber light issue has returned twice even after resetting - the Back to My Mac apple id/passwords are not "sticking" - or have not been. It's not a big deal to reset them, just a hassle. But there was just another security update installed this morning and maybe that addresses this issue. Thanks for this thread.

So, I tried the update again today and had the same result, it wouldn't proceed with the install. Just gave me a message saying that the install failed. The amber LED was still blinking.

So here is what I did to make the install work:

I didn't attach an Ethernet cable to the MBP. Just left it hooked up to my DSL modem.

I opened the AirPort Utility and selected "edit". I saw a flag in the "Back to My Mac" box in the "Base Station" screen. I selected "edit" and I entered my apple id and password. Then I selected Update at the bottom of that screen and it updated the Back to My Mac data. It took quite a long time.

When it was finished, the Amber LED stopped blinking and was on steady.

I closed the menu and then clicked on the AirPort Extreme icon in the AirPort Utility. It opened a screen with the setup detail and I saw that it still had version 7.7.2 of the firmware installed and a note that there was an update available. I told it to install the update and it installed, taking quite a long time. It was hard to wait as I was concerned that it was not going to do it right. If a firmware update doesn't go right, it can really mess things up. It finally finished.

I checked and version 7.7.3 was now installed, but the amber LED was blinking again. So, I selected Edit in the AirPort Utility and sure enough the Back to My Mac id and password was missing again (as edbedb suggested above). So looks like the install does wipe out the apple id and password for Back to My Mac in the AirPort Extreme. So I again entered my apple id and password. Let it update again and the blinking light went to steady. Mine is now updated to 7.7.3 and the amber led is on steady and everything is working.

So, if anyone is still having a problem with this update. Follow the above directions and it will install.

Wonder why Apple doesn't give us some hint or help in installing this update?? There is no help in the AirPort Extreme help file. I wasted a lot time searching for some instructions on updating the firmware in the help file system. Nothing there.

I'm surprised that Apple doesn't monitor these forums, since they are on the Apple web site. Thanks to those who do monitor here and offer some good suggestions. I'm impressed with those who are willing to help!

Something wonky here. When I posted the above message just now, I saw message, "An error occured while trying to submit your post. Please try again."

I kept trying and kept getting the same message. So opened a different browser window and saw that it has been posted four or five times.

And, I can't see a way to delete the duplicate posts. So, I edited this one.
