have 10.5.6 want to upgrade to mavericks what are the steps?

have two machines one with 10.5.6, a newer one with Mavericks, nothing I need on the 10.5.6 machine. can I just connect the two macs together and copy the operating system and all applications to the older mac? Older mac is intel 2.66 machine 4gb ram 1067 MHZ DDR3.

Or should I just shell out 19.00 for an upgrade to 10.6 then upgrade on line to Mavericks?
