Partitioning internal hard drive

I have a couple of questions regarding more memory on my cube at home.

It is partitioned with a 10g block with os9.2.2 and an 8+g block with os10.3.9. Ideally I should backup the os10 block and create one partition. My reason for not is because of concern of loosing settings, information and the time it will take for me to either find or redo what was lost.

1. Can I erase the os9 block only without affecting the os10 block and clean install os10.3.9 in its place? Essentially two partitions with os 10.3.9. Will I have two itunes, etc. or will it use the same one but I have a choice on which block?

2. I also purchased a Western Digital 320g. My Book external hard drive in hopes of using it as well for the kids pictures and itunes and get it off of the 8gig block. Do I need to install os10.3.9 on it in order for it to function as a stand alone hard drive and not just merely a storage unit? Is this a wise thing to do?

3. What additional problems can occur by doing 1 and/or 2?

My ignorance is near the top when dealing with these issues.
Thanks for your time and assistance.
