Bricked iPhone 5 after 7.1.1 update

I have a bricked phone after updating to 7.1.1. The phone is in restore mode and it doesn't seem to do anything else. I turned it off/on and the "connect to itunes logo" appears again. It is frustrating to download a small update and get your phone bricked. Any idea how to fix this without restoring from scratch? Shame on you Apple, TEST YOUR SOFTWARE BEFORE ISSUING AN UPDATE.

Yes I have, and it doesn't recognize it as my iPhone but as an iPhone 5 in recovery mode, it suggests to Restore the iPhone to Original Settings and thats it. But if I do that, I will loose some of the content like pictures and Whatsapp group pictures which are not in my icoud for storage reasons. I mean its not fair for them to issue an update with errors of this kind, but it's even worst they don't provide the means to fix it.

Sorry but I'm "one" of the unlucky ones as well😠

Ran 7.1.1 update on Iphone 5S last night but did not install, I just downloaded it over wifi.

This morning iPhone reminded me I had an install update waiting so I agreed to it.

Iphone shuts down, then 1 minute later starts flashing connect to Itunes icon!!

So here I sit in recovery mode, my iPhone is conncected to my Mac and currently reinstalling everything from my backup.

I would venture to guess you updated on the iPhone itself. What likely happened, is during the update process you lost network connectivity for a period of time (could be short), when it re-picked up the downlaod continiued, but the actual file was corrupted. When the iPhone went to install this, there were issues that resulted in the iOS becoming corrupted.

Only solution for this is to restore using iTunes, you will lose all your stuff. If you are not backing up, this is a good lesson as to why it is important.

As hard as Apple may try to prevent this from happening, there are situations outside their control.

This stupid update just bricked my iPhone. This is a Joke!! Apple are toying with our products like we're decoys or beta testers. Why should we have to suffer losing data if there isnt a recent backup because of a crap update that was not tested throughly? The recent update of 11.1.5 for iTunes also deleted everything off my iPod classic which was working perfectly for over 4 years. They dont test these updates enough because there are clearly bugs present!

This may be true. My wifi has never had a problem with drops, and the update did just come out. I could see the servers being overloaded with the 7.1.1 update downloads, causing the update to stall, yet on your Iphone you get no "server" errors (where the phone indicates it could not download the update). The update seems to continue, you go to update but unfortunately you have a "incomplete" update file, which then causes Recovery Mode. However its unusual that several others are also experiencing this same problem.

The question is are all the users having problems updating over the air or are they updating through Itunes??

What is the ratio?

I still have 2 other iPhones to go, so I'll have to wait and see and backup, backup.

I can confrim that I have updated 2 iPhones over the air to 7.1.1. An iPhone 5C and an iPhone 5S.

It does not happen to everyone, and true it could be due to server load. It is just a tough situation with no solution other than restoring the iPhone in iTunes, and then restoring your backup if you have one!

Always a good idea to backup the iPhone before any update just in-case the update fails for any reaons.

It can also fail if there is already some corruption in place in the current iOS, or if you have modified the iOS in anyway from a jailbreak.

Just as a follow up, I wanted to offer some advice for people who might be experiencing this issue. When the phone entered Recovery Mode, it prompted me to attach it to iTunes. Once plugged in to iTunes, it installed the 7.1.1 update, but it then informed me that my last backup available was January 2013(!). I had thought that I had iCloud turned on previously, but iTunes did not offer me the chance to restore from any iCloud backups.

Instead of installing from a year-old backup, I disconnected the phone from my computer. I then followed these instructions for restoring an iCloud backup: https://support.apple.com/kb/ph12521

The key thing is that iTunes may not offer you the most recent backup. If you had iCloud backup turned on prior to 7.1.1, restore from iCloud for the most recent backup, not iTunes.

For the record, I never Jailbreak and none of my IOS devices are Jailbroken, I see no need for jailbreak, on something that has worked well for me. This update has been a mixed grab bag of frustration for several of us. I never expected the OTA update to break my phone. Luckily, and rule of thumb I do run backups every other day.

I still have 2 phones that need updates, and I'll run backups before running this update.

Also lesson learned on the OTA updates, I do love the flexibility and smaller file update but I guess I'll go back to updating through iTunes with the device plugged in.

I hope everyone is able to salvage their photos and other personal files.
