acceptable video file types

hi all.

i realize this is a question i can try and find in the help documentation but if i type video into the help menu the closest result i get is a section on filtering file types. also if i put a similar inquiry into google i don't seem to get helpful responses.

does anyone know where i find what kind of video file formats i can import into Aperture?

also can anyone advise whether it is a good idea to import these into aperture?

i ask because i have a whole host of videos some created originally in PC, some from various cameras, some exported from Aperture - and some where i get an error or that only "open" in Adobe Media Encoder (i don't understand why this happens or whether i am supposed to convert it to another file format).

frank was kind enough to help me out with PDF slideshows and it seems i will store these external to the Aperture DB but i am wondering what to do with all my other content. this is sort of doubly confusing since i have some Aperture created video/slideshow content residing in aperture.

also is there a video equivalent to Aperture?

hi frank. thanks.

at the risk of sounding a tad slow, if i /don't/ see a video format listed here - say for instance it is some video that came over from my PC and is not coming in from my baby leica or my iphone - that means aperture won't import or display it?

if so, can i convert the thing in Adobe Media Encoder or some swiss army knife software to one of the formats listed in generic section on this page?

i took a stab at this awhile back but then i started reading up on "Codecs" and i got lost in other tasks because i couldn't make hide nor hare of it all.

also, do you happen to know /why/ clicking on a video format will open in Adobe Media Encoder and show in a list in this software? i have to read up on the software but i would basically just like to convert my files, dump them into Aperture so i can store and see them...

THANKS

Generic audio formats

thank you.

so if i am understanding this the bottom line is that if i am not likely going to do high end video editing but i want to open and see the 20+ videos that i have on my hard drive i need to just see if the format will open in QuickTime or see if i can convert the format somehow, yes? alternatively i can check and see if Flip4Mac will open them is that about right?
