"video" vs. "slideshow"

this is probably a really dumb question but can anyone help me clarify how to think about video and slideshows and similar content? i can't understand what kind of terms i should be using for these things.

i guess something i create by stringing together photos is a slideshow and something i create by filming with my camera is a video and that is pretty much the whole explanation? i suppose this breaks down somewhere along the line, does it?

should i also understand that it is globally not a good idea to try and store my videos (things taken on my camera) in Aperture which is something i generate slideshows in? or, er, i guess this breaks down because Aperture imports everything from my Leica and my iPhone which means it is also importing my video content, isn't it?

so basically i have "non-Aperture" imported videos and "non-Aperture created" slideshows in Aperture and everything else is on my desktop in a sorted folder is that it?

i guess i am a little confused in trying to get organized over here.

ALSO, is there a way to /sort/ by video or by slideshow in Aperture or do i have to do this manually....?

That question is tricky, because by asking about videos and slide shows you are trying to compare different categories.

Videos are media files in a video format - either taken by a camera or rendered by a program.

A slideshow is a presentation of media - mainly of image files. You use themes in Aperture to create elaborate multimedia presentations. Aperture can present the slide show directly, but if you want to view it on a different computer or video player, you can export and render your slide show as a video file.

hi leonie. thanks. can i just ask you to elaborate on this part "Videos are media files in a video format". i am feeling a tad stupid but i can't understand what this means. i mean, i do understand that slideshows are "presentations of media - mainly image files".

but the first part - maybe i don't understand what you mean by video format?

or - are slideshows also considered to be in video format or are they specifically /not/ video format...?

THANK YOU

Jon,

but the first part - maybe i don't understand what you mean by video format?

I don't know how to be clearer - but I'll try. I mean, a video is a media file in a specific format, see this lists of format, that are supported by Aperture: Aperture 3: About Video and Audio formats in Aperture

Video files are external representation of the media used for archiving and sharing or streaming.

A slideshow (in Aperture) is an interactive presentation. It exists in "limbo" as an album of images with a theme and settings. Just like image versions, it needs to be rendered to a file to be used outside Aperture.
