Aperture Hangs on Generating Preview for an image.

Has anyone observed this? Import Activity continues to run, appears to be "stuck" on generating a preview for a particular image. Can't Cancel the task. If you quit Aperture, it'll move all the imported images to the trash. And it still won't quit, you have to force-quit.

This is the second time this has happened to me. This time I was able to export the images (minus the one that appeared to cause the problem) to a networked volume. I'm going to try and re-import and see what happens.

I've repaired the database.

The next time this happens, launch Aperture with the Shift key held down. That will defer the generation of previews. You can then try to isolate the offending image that cannot be processed.

If this problem continous to happen, you may want to reformat your card or try a different card reader. When I had a problem with unreadable image files on import, replacing the card reader helped.

Is your Aperture library on a NAS, or are you referencing your original image files to a NAS?

I'd try if Aperture can import correctly, if you create a new library for testing. If that works, repair or rebuild your regular Aperture library. After force-quitting is a library repair recommended anyway.

To launch the Aperture library First Aid Tools to repair or rebuild a library:

  • Quit Aperture.
  • Back up your Aperture library, if you do not have a current, working backup.
  • Hold down the key combination alt/option ⌥ and command ⌘ at the same time, while launching Aperture. Keep holding down the keys firmly, until you see the First Aid panel.
  • Select "Repair database" from the panel. This may take a long time for a large library. Don't interrupt it.
  • If Repair does not suffice, do a Rebuil as well.
