Apple TV won't update

After years of updating my Apple TV's without a problem, I ran into this today, too, with my 2nd Gen. Apple TV. When I went through the Update process, and clicked the button to begin the Update, I got the usual screen showing Update progress. But, then it just stopped. The little gear went round and round and nothing further happened, for about 10 minutes. When I clicked the button again it asked if I wanted to stop the Update process and gave me an option to try again later.

I went through this two more times, each about an hour apart. Nothing but spinning gear with no other progress. So, I backed out of the Update process again.

Then, on a whim, I went to the Menu and clicked on "Restart" (not "Reset"). After the Restart process I went back to try the Update. This time my ATV2 came back and said the Update was not available at this time, but I should try again later.

I tried Update one more time. Lo and behold the ATV2 marched right through the process, and quickly. All is done now.

Thank you!! Once I restared my Apple TV it finally upadated. It happened exactly the same way for me as it did for you-- meaning that I got the same message that the update was unavailable the first time I tried to update after restarting. But the second time worked just fine.

Had the same issue. The reset worked for me too. Thank you! (I was afraid it was an issue with the wifi and I'd have to wire it to the router for the update... which would have been a huge hassle with my setup)

That appears to have fixed it for me also. I had tried unplugging, waiting and plugging back I. But that didn't do the trick. Guess Apple products are turning in Microsoft products, they need to restarted on a regular basis.

I get an error message saying "the update was not successful. To restart your Apple TV and try again, go to Settings -> General and choose Restart."

I have restarted and tried updating about 10 times with no luck. It just starts downloading the update and when it's finished downloaded I get the message.

FWIW, I had similar experiences with update attempts throughout yesterday. This morning, it updated, Did nothing different than I was doing yesterday,

I had to reset the device and set it up again as a new tv for the update to start...
