4-digit passcode for software update on iPhone

I was trying to install software update on my iPhone and it is asking me for a 4-digit passcode. It has not asked this in the past. I only had to login to my apple account using my Applie ID and password.. I do not recall setting up a 4-digit passcode. Where do I find this?

iPhone 5, iOS 7.1.1

You can't find it. You either know the passcode to unlock the iPad/iPhone or you don't.

However, I have seen other users state this very same thing when they tried to update their iOS, meaning that the device was asking for a passcode that had never been set by the user. I started seeing this when users started updating to iOS 7.

If you cannot unlock the device you have to restore it as new in order to remove the passcode. You could try restoring form your last backup - assuming that you have a recent backup and assuming that the backup does not contain a passcode as you state that it shouldn't.
