why do emails give an alert in IOS but disappear?

I get an email alert on both my iPad and MacbookAir, but some messages on the iPad disappear when I try to open them. the email can be opened in OSXREMAIL on the MacBook,however. As, well, some emails can be opened in IOS. Any ideas?
