HT201324: iPhoto and Aperture: Using Photo Stream

Q: Why would a pro photographer use the latest iPhoto and Photo Stream?

I don't use Aperture.  The upgrade to the latest and greatest iPhoto is a reasonable cost, but I have heard complaints about it all.

  Thank you!

THey would not  use iPhoto - it is a consumer level program and is not designed for professional use - Aperature is the professioal level Apple Photo manager

And if you listen to complaint to make deciaions then you will never do anything - everyone complains about everything - mostly totally invalid and uninformed complaints

    No and No.

iPhoto is not good with Referenced libraries, and so will hardly scale to the volume of images a pro is likely to have. It also has comsumer level tools for processing.

As for complaints: do you mean at the App store etc? If so those reviews aren't worth the paper they're not written on.

The problems with them are manifold: for a start, happy people are less likely to review, unhappy happy are much more inclined to. That's why we don't have thousands and thousands of posts on this forum from all the people who have no problems saying "look I have no problems". Unhappy people get cross and are more likely to express that anger in negative reviews.

Then what about the reviewer? What is his or her knowledge, experience and skill level? No doubt they are having problems, and real ones, but how do you know if their issues are problems with the app, their own inexperience, third party conflicts and so on. I've seen people on here claim the fact that iPhoto won't edit video is a bug. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of posts from folks on here who are certain they've found a bug, only for their glitch to be resolved. No review is worth anything unless you know something of the reviewer, his or her knowledge and experience.

So frankly, I never bother with those reviews on any such stores, not just iPhoto on the Mac App Store.

If you're a professional photograher you should visit  The DAM Forum and read up on the various pro DAM (digital asset management) apps that are available.  I use Media Pro 1 .  There's a demo version you can experiment with.

You don't want to use iPhoto.

I've kinda wondered about this as well. I would think the answer would depend on the type of photography. Does an event photographer need a DAM to keep all the photos from all the events they've ever worked? Couldn't they just use iPhoto and an external editor like Pixelmator to process the event and then store the photos on backup drives and delete the event from iPhoto? I wouldn't think having access to every wedding photo ever taken would be very useful.

I'm not making assumptions; just curious.

I believe workflows are discussed at the site and that shoujld shed some light on the subject.

I haven't checked in with DAM for awhile.   I've adopted most of the workflow.

    Thanks!

Curiosity is good.  And a valid thought.  Thanks for taking the time to respond!

My question was prompted by getting a prompt from Apple today to check my iCloud Preferences.  I don't use iCloud for much but I did download the Security Update.  IPhoto was highlighted, etc.
