I'm so disgusted! I just realised I will lose the photos of my daughter's birth... And why??? because I pushed a stupid button for a software update???? Apple,..I need a solution. I haven't paid this device to have this kind of issues.

No. You lost your photos because you didn't bother to copy them to your computer like you would with any other digital camera.

WHY have you not backed up in months? What if you had dropped and broken your phone, or it was lost, or stolen?

Backing up your data is YOUR responsibility.

You failed to import your pictures to your computer as you would a digital camera.

You failed to backup your device prior to doing an update and your blaming Apple...

With any updates - user shoulld back up their devices before doing so.

I'm a little confused. At what point did the phone go into Recovery mode? Did you just leave it alone for awhile after you clicked the update button? I just updated my phone, and after the initial download, the phone restarted itsef a couple of times, installing the update in the process. When you do an update, you need to leave your device alone until it is completely done.

As far as your photos go, sorry, but if you have not backed them up, and you are truely in Recovery mode, then you won't have any way to restore them.

Are they in your Photo Stream in iCloud by any chance?

If not, and you have to do a Recovery, then you won't be able to restore them from a backup.

But if they were so important, why wouldn't you have backed them up?

You cannot blame Apple for this. What if your phone had been stolen, or you had lost it? You would be in the same boat - you would lose your photos.

So, two things:

Are you sure your phone isn't just completing the update? Have you let it do it's thing for 20 or 30 minutes? If not, leave it alone and see if it is in the same condition in 30 minutes.

If you have, then determine if you have those photos in your Photo Stream. If you do, then they should still be there when you restore your device and sign back onto iCloud.

It isn't Apple responsibility for user to regularly backup their phone or the very least import their camera roll pics to their computer.

You failed to do both, you should blame yourself not apple.

Oh but you can rant about how it's Apple fault that all your photos are gone, because you failed to backup your device or import your pics to your computer.

So you're not backing up to iCloud either?

If you had turned on iCloud backups, which is FREE, the phone would have backed up automatically. Every day. All that's required is that you plug it into power and that it have a connection to a WiFi network...

Apple gave you the tools to back it up. They offered to do it for you. They can not force you to do it, however.

So, follow the recovery process and hopefully your iCloud back-up will take care of the rest but do as I always do - before any update, I do a manual back-up with iTunes and ensure I have a recent iCloud back-up. I've never had an issue with any iPhone or iPad but you cannot be too careful.

As Bob LeVitus says in OSX for Dummies - I'm paraphrasing but "There are generally two types of people when it comes to computers. Those who have lost data, and those who will lose data."

The solution is to back up, back up, and back up. The other resopindents have made good points. You may not have liked those pointsm, but they were right, and that is that you cannot blame the manufacturer for your own omission. I'm sure that you've learned now how clkose you came to losing your precious photographic memories. So do yourself a favour, and back up your phone to your computer AND to iCloud through iTunes on your compuiter.

A word of caution - Photo Stream in iCloud only stgores a maximum of 1000 photos, before it starts deleting the oldest photos first.

Yes - if you had automatic backups turned on, then any time that it was plugged in and connected to Wifi, it would back up.

Once you have completed the Recovery process, you will be able to see the iCloud backups available:

RESTORE FROM ICLOUD BACKUP

And, again, if you had Photo Stream turned on, then you should have the last 1000 photos showing.

Also, do you have a Mac? If so, go to iPhoto and once it is open, click on Preferences under the iPhoto menu item at the top. Then click on Photo Stream. If you click the options shown below, your Photo Stream photos will automatically upload and import to iPhoto every month:
