Portions of waveforms are not appearing

Warning: I'm a newb.

Recently updated to 10.1.1 (sometime last week - can't remember which day). Since then, the complete waveform for a video (w/audio) will not appear, and neither will the waveform for the audio only track I'm placing with it (but not in the same place/frames).

If I toggle Show Reference Waveform to off, some of the waveform actually *appears* (but not all). Can't seem to find a consistent answer for why just chunks of the waveform(s) have disappeared. Help!

A few other users have experience this same issue.

No known answer that I know of.

The common denominator seems to a quirk of updating to the newer version.

Do you have Background Rendering turned on? If so, see if turning it off helps your machine in drawing the wave forms.

Unfortunately turning off Background Rendering did nothing 😟

Not sure whether I should just chuck and re-import the media and see if that kicks FCP to draw the waveforms... Definitely not my ideal solution.

Just trying a few ideas since I think Al is quite right in saying, no known answer.

One other thing you might try is going into the event folder and trashing the Peaks Data sub folder in the Render Files folder. Or from within the app trashing the project render files.

Update: problem 80% solved.

I chucked all render data, chucked any transcoded media to force a re-write of the waveforms, chucked Peaks Data, and nothing. Copied/moved project from one HD to another, and the problem persisted.

Anyways, I was fiddling around and was changing Clip Appearance in Timeline, and zoomed super duper in - just on the spots that wouldn't render. If I slowly, *slowly* backed out of zooming on each non-rendered section while flipping Clip Appearance options back and forth (audio only vs third from left video+audio), magically 80% of the missing waveforms appeared at my normal working zoom.

I still can't get one small chunk to appear, but for now, I can work around it. This was an incredibly unsatisfying end to my problem. Also, the orange line of "unrendered" death has appeared under the entirety of the original clip, and will not disappear. Ah well.

Thanks for the help guys - I guess toggling zooms and clip views might jog FCP into rendering...

I am having the same problem and, like you I trashed the render files, peak files etc and found that, like you zooming ALL THE WAY and s l o w l y zooming out does give me a partial waveform. Nasty bug!

Zooming in several levels made the waveforms re-appear for me, then thankfully, they remained while I zoomed back out.

Hi Sedai,

I have been having the same problem as all you here. I tried zooming in and zooming out slowly but it doesn't always work.. HOWEVER. if you right click and hit "expand audio components" you see a blank bar and the audio bit underneath. Give it a shot and see write back if this helps. Old article I know but better late than never.

Hey all, working in FCPX v10.1.4 and have been having incomplete waveforms all over the place. the only way I seem to get them back is to right click and open clip in time line (from the project timeline), this and sometimes a zoom all the way in "jogs" FCPX into givening me my waveforms. this does the clip in the timeline but in the event browser still no waveform!! ugh.

This is frustrating in that I do love being able to use the waveform to edit by, one of the reasons to edit in fcpx not avid. (avid doesn't have waveforms in the event browser, only the timeline)
