I have been trying to backup my iphone 5 to itunes but it needed the lastest version to be installed. I did this, but just as it was finishing the install it failed and now the phone is in recovery mode. Does anyone have any suggestions to take it out of recovery mode so that I don't lose everything?

Anything that was on it is already gone. Hopefully, you actually backed it up before attempting to install the update.
Unfortunately, if it is in Recovery Mode, chances are you already have.
You can try a reset but if it goes right back to Recovery Mode you will need to restor.
Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons and don’t let go until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears (no data will be lost)
