Q: Apple ID has been disabled

I have Apple TV and last night when I turned it on, there was a message stating that my Apple ID had been disabled. How and why would this happen? I didn't initiate it or even log into my account. I then got a message on my phone that I needed to reset my password. Is this a security measure that Apple takes because someone tried to access my account?
