if i was buying music from my phone and broke my phone how do i get my music back?

i got an old iphone from a friend. i bought some music from itunes. i broke the iphone. so i went to my pc downloaded itunes and figured when i signed in my music would be there in the library but it isnt. HELP. i cant afford to buy the music again and itunes is the only place the albums are available.
