My girlfriend found her daughter's old I-Mac in the basement stored away for quite a while. the daughter does not remember the password. What are the alternatives ?

We need more specifics such as the version of OS X installed, without that basic information it's difficult to help. If you can't figure it out you can take it to the local Apple Store or AASP and they can help reset the password.
