computer states that my disk is damaged and can't be repaired

Soooo I went to install the new update (mavericks) and come to find out my Disk is damaged and it can't be repaired??!?! I never once received a notification that something was wrong with my computer prior to doing this update! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!? HOW CAN I SAVE ALL MY DOCUMENTS/MUSIC/PHOTOS? PLEASE HELP!

You should always have a backup of your HD no matter what.


You are saying you ran the Disk Utility from the installer disk- Repair Disk and it failed?


Disk Warrior a lot of times can repair what Disk Utility can not.


Check the SMART status of your drive will in DiskUtility

This is my first MAcBook so I'm really unfamiliar with what your asking. all I know is I tried to do the update and now it's telling me me disk is damaged and can't be repaired. I followed the instructions to do a "repair disk" and the option was not available. now I'm assuming I would need to back all my things up. and I don't even know how to do that :(
