Email "draft" disappears

I've seen similar questions elsewhere but none of them answered.

I was writing an email from within the camera app. That is, I took a picture and then attached it to an email. While I was writing the email, I wanted to check something on the Internet so I switched to Safari. When I came back to the camera app to continue my email it was gone. I also looked in the mail app under drafts but there was nothing there. Starting over, I was once again in the middle of writing the email when the doorbell rang. I put the phone down and answered the door. When I came back the phone had gone into lock mode. Unlocking the phone, I was in the camera app but there was again no email.

I realize that I could have, or should have, saved the email as a draft. But surely these actions shouldn't result in the loss of the entire email.

My question, such as it is, is there any way to recover that email?
