Select the document, CTRL- or RIGHT-click then select Move to Trash from the context menu.
I had this problem as well for a while. Click on the Finder icon and go to documents, then drag whatever file you would like to delete to the trash icon. Then you can empty trash if you want to get rid of it forever.
