how do i adjust the scrolling speed/sensitivity? and also when I use 3 fingers to slid left to go back to the previous page, it doesn't react sensitive enough

I just installed the new OS X Mavericks hoping it would be better. I actually hate it but I am trying to get use to it and relearn the differences. One thing I hate the most and that I hope I can fix/change is:

How do I adjust the scrolling speed/sensitivity?

When I use 3 fingers to slide left to go back to the previous page, it doesnt reactive sensitive enough and I feel like I have to jerk left.

I stil use AIM messages but when I use a emoticon (ex: 🙂) it shows up as ": )" instead. How do I use the emoticons automatically, or emojis?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Hi,

In iChat the Smilies worked on several variations of the Colon, dash and close parentheses.

One of them was the ":)" that you posted. Another was the ":-)" variation I described.

The Messages version tends to require that you chose the Smiley from the Drop down (right hand end of Text field).

However this is also supposed to work. (Text Replacement).

Hi Ralph, thank you for the reply, but this did kind of work but it didnt work.

When I did what you said, it did automatically go to the emoji type of emoticon. However, I was actually hoping for it to automatically go to the AIM emoticon that it provides.

Because when I type in ":)" or ":-)" itll show up as emoji and the reciever end wont be able to see it and only sees "??"

So I was wondering if you know how to get it to use the AIM emoticons that it provides?

Thank you.

Thank you SilverSkyRat. This helped me out and fixed my issue.

Also, when I want to shut down my laptop, I usually press the power button on the top right of my keyboard and then click shut down. However, after this update, whenever I press down the power button nothing pops up and nothing happens.

I was wondering if you know how to get it back to shutting it down once I press the power button on the top right of my laptop keyboard?

Hi,

iChat used to do this differently.

The so called Smiley was actually sent as the text.

The app then "saw" it in the incoming stream and changed it to the pic.

So your end sort of "posted" the pic if you sent a Smiley and the other end interpreted it as a Smiley and added one to the incoming side/balloon.

This caused all sort of issues when people added Smiley packs to early versions such as iChat 2 and 3

(it was how Ryan M. discovered the Reinstall method).

It did seem that later versions did actually send a smiley pic for the text you typed in.

As all version up to Message 7 also had the menu item to either Show Smilies or Hide them it is a little difficult to say with any certainty how that was achieved.

As Messages 8 does not have an option for Showing or Hiding Smilies you cannot find an old chat with a Smiley and turn it On and Off to find out what happens.

I am not sure how the AIM for Mac app or the PC version works in this respect.

I would guess the Emoji is sent as a pic.

If not it will then be a two character substitution which cannot be interpreted by the AIM app itself.

I sent a Smiley from one Account I have to another.

I cannot "drag" the Smiley the way I can a Picture that has been sent.

If I highlight it and copy it and paste it in TextEdit it remains an Emoji icon.

Even trying to change the Font to see if it will display as ":)" does not work - you cannot change it from Emoji.

I am not sure there is gong to be a work around.
