why do my devices keep asking for my email passwords?

What is the device doing when it asks for your email password, attempting to get mail? What happens when you put in the password?

it happens on all my devices, iphone, ipad and mini. it just randomly pops up and asks me for my password. The device is doing nothing. I can be looking at another app or texting or whatever and it give me a pop up window asking for this message. I'm getting my email, have a few accounts and have tried to delete the account and re-enter again but it continually happens.
when I enter the password "at the time" it ask, nothing happens - it's strange bc I'm still getting my emails. I just want it to quit asking for it on the pop up. Any ideas?
I've also had other users at my work have the same issue... cannot seem to help them.
If you are getting a popup requesting your email password, then there is something wrong with the email account. That is the only application on the iPhone that uses the email password. Is this always the same account? Do you have received mail after entering the password?
