"Alt" key not working

Today, my left-hand "Alt" key stopped working. Pressing the key does nothing. However, the "alt" key on the right-hand side of the keyboard does work. I tried a simple restart, but it had no effect. I took off the keys to see if anything unusual was stuck under there, but there was nothing.

Is there any particular reason why my left-hand "alt" key would just stop working?
