I setup iCloud on my new MBP and it asked me for a security code, I entered it, and then it asked me for a phone number. I canceled out when it asked me for my phone number.
1. Why did it ask for my phone number and how is it being used?
2. Since I canceled out, what does that mean for my security code? I'm not even sure what the security code is for?

If you enabled iCloud keychain, it will request both a security code and a phone number that can receive sms messages. The security code is used to authorize additional devices to use your keychain, and setting up iCloud keychain on additional devices will send a code via sms to the phone number you designate, which must be entered before the keychain can be set up.
