What is a pass code? How would I know it?

While trying to update I'm being asked a numerical pass code. I don't know what this is. Can anyone help?

iPad mini Wi-Fi, iOS 7.1

You need to enter the four digit passcode that you enter when you start your iPad or awaken it from sleep after an Autolock. If you do not remember the passcode you will have to restore the device. Here's a link to what to do when you forgot your passcode.
